Obituary of Daniel Clemens Gaul

LUXEMBURG, IOWA

Daniel C. Gaul, 78, of Luxemburg died peacefully Friday, November 17, 2017, at home after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Visitation will be held from 2 - 8 pm Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville.  Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9-10 am at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2017, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, with burial in the church cemetery.  Rev. Noah Diehm will officiate.

Daniel was born October 31, 1939, at the home farm near Luxemburg the son of George and Alice (Hoeger) Gaul.  He married Barbara Ehrlich on November 9, 1959, in Dubuque, Iowa.  Together they farmed near Luxemburg for many years.  The first brand-new tractor they bought was a John Deere 4020.  His family restored this special tractor for him for their 50th Anniversary.  During his farming career, Daniel enjoyed working with livestock.  His dog, Chuma, held a special place in his heart.

Daniel was a quiet, honest man.  Family and faith meant everything to him.  As he talked about his family, he beamed with pride.  He was a lover of the land, walnut trees and anything sweet to eat.

Survivors include his wife, Barb; children: Cheryl (Al) Keltner of Manchester, Daniel (Jean) Gaul of Rickardsville, Carrie (Charles) Deutmeyer of New Vienna, Kristine (Randy) Nefzger of Petersburg, Keith (Amy) Gaul of Luxemburg, Cindy (Tom) Roling of Dyersville and Jason (Rebecca) Gaul of Luxemburg; grandchildren: Raechel Keltner (fiancé Brian Krogmann), Whitney (Dr. Jacob) Wessels, Tony (Amanda) Gaul, Luke Gaul, Melissa Gaul, Jared (Caitlyn) Deutmeyer, Nicole (Joe) Ament, Kathy (Mike) Wendt, Jacob, Megan and Jamie Nefzger, Kody, Becca, Emily, Carter and Ethan Gaul, Michael, Sarah, Steven and Andrew Roling, Kael, Clay and Kadee Gaul; great grandchildren: Preston and Keeley Deutmeyer, and Wilhelmina “Willa” Wessels; siblings: John J. (Kay) Gaul of Peosta, Phyllis Hildebrand of Dyersville, Elaine (David) Shaw of Springville, IA, and Karla (Robert) Kluesner of Farley; a sister-in-law: Judy Gaul of Luxemburg,; In-laws: Paul (Bernice) Ehrlich, Mark (Lois) Ehrlich, Ethel (Richard) Thoma, Dolores (Cletus) Ambrosy, Norbert (Nancy) Ehrlich, Marilyn (Richard) Borgerding, Vincent Ehrlich and Linda Ehrlich.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Patrick R. Gaul, and brothers-in-law: Jerome Hildebrand and Leonard Hildebrand, his mother and father in-law, Fred and Thelma (Bahl) Ehrlich, Thomas (Rosalyn) Ehrlich, Ina (Robert) Hohmann, Ernest Ehrlich, Frances (Carl) Pfeiler, Frederick V. Ehrlich and Diane Ehrlich.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Allison and Ryan, and to Daniel’s granddaughter, Becca, for the wonderful care.
